-
Criteria for works included are scholarly books and articles, both digital and in print, on the composer's work, life, historical context, sources for locating autographs, and performance practices. Dissertations are included, but are not examined by author. Master's theses, reviews, program notes, or works for popular consumption are excluded. Works are primarily in English and German and were written in the 20th century.
-
Resource organized into six bibliography chapters and three indexes. Chapter 1 deals with the general background of Handel's time period (general history, music of the period, aesthetics, etc.) and is divided into six subheadings. Chapter 2 deals with Handel's life and his music in general, divided into three subheadings. Chapter 3 deals with sources for locating autograph scores and compositional methods, divided into five subheadings. Chapter 4 deals with studies of Handel's music, divided into nine subheadings. Chapter 5 deals with performance practices and the Handel tradition, divided into two subheadings. Chapter 6 is a list of bibliographies and discographies, divided into five subheadings. In each chapter, entries are organized alphabetically by author under each subheading. Most chapters begin with a brief explanation or recommendation of the items constituting that section. With the exception of Chapter 6, complete bibliographic information is given, including annotations and ISBN and LC call numbers where possible. Items are progressively numbered throughout and prefixed with a single letter designating which chapter it is found (Chapter 1 is A, Chapter 2 is B, etc.). Entries in Chapter 6 give only complete bibliographic information and lack annotations. It concludes with an index of Handel's works, an index of names, and an index of authors. All indexes are organized alphabetically according to the focus of the index, cross-referencing to item's letter-number within the bibliographies.
-
Annotations indicate which works author finds indispensable, questionable, or disputed. The letter-number system of identification makes it easy to determine the nature of an item when searching through the indexes.
