Baron, John H. Chamber Music: A Research and Information Guide. 3rd ed. Routledge Music Bibliographies. New York and London: Routledge, 2010.
-
An annotated bibliography for scholarly chamber music research. Also guides music enthusiasts to substantial reading the topic.
-
Sources include articles in journals and magazines, books, dissertations, theses and essays or chapters in Festschriften, treatises and biographies. Sources mostly in English or German. Includes only sources relevant to classical instruments.
-
Six chapters, each with topical subcategories. (1) Basic Reference, (2) History of Chamber Music, (3) Analytical Studies, (4) Performance Practice of Chamber Music, (5) Performers of Chamber Music, and (6) Miscellaneous Topics. Most subcategories are further subdivided by subject or topic. For example, the subcategory “Woodwind Ensembles” (chapter 2) acknowledges sources about different kinds of woodwind ensembles, such as the woodwind quintets. Each entry includes an accession number, standard bibliographic information, and an annotation. Ordering of entries varies across subsections. Four indices: Subjects, Persons, Authors, and Chamber Music Ensembles.
