Everett, William A. The Musical: A Research and Information Guide. 2nd ed. Routledge Music Bibliographies. New York: Routledge, 2011.
-
A bibliography focusing primarily on the history, creators, performers, and production of American musical theatre created between the late nineteenth century and 2009. This reference work is especially appropriate for students performing research on this broad topic.
-
This reference work includes 1,474 items, consisting of dictionaries, encyclopedias, chronologies, essays, articles from both popular and scholarly periodicals, bibliographies, recorded anthologies, discographies, websites, and dissertations and theses. The vast majority of these items are all in English. Under the definition of 'musical,' the author's scope is filmed musicals, and television musicals. Specific musicals adressed are mostly American musicals and operettas created between the late nineteenth century to 2009, both popular and obscure. While the overall focus is American, a few items focus on European musicals, French operetta, and Bollywood. Articles coming from newspapers and popular periodicals are included only when the coverage is substantial and informative. Excluded from inclusion are websites dedicated to individual performers, official websites for shows, YouTube videos, blogs, Facebook pages, posts from Twitter, printed anthologies of greatest hits, cast and studio albums, soundtracks, and Broadway- or Hollywood-themed solo albums.
-
This reference source is divided into an introduction, fifteen sections, and an index. Introduction discusses state of research and discusses the relationship between musicals and operas. The main body is then divided into fifteen sections: Reference Works; General Histories; Musical Theatre; Film and Television Musicals; Works; Creators; Performers; Performance; Historiography; Periodicals; Sets and Series of Printed Material; Discographies; Recorded Anthologies; Video Anthologies; and Other Searchable Resources. The majority of sections are further divided into subsections, usually by publication type or content. Within these subsections, entries are organized alphabetically by author and include a complete bibliographic citation (often with an ISBN and Library of Congress call number where appropriate) and an annotation. Annotations range from a single line to a sizable paragraph. In the 'Recorded Anthologies' section, entries are organized alphabetically by album title and include the record label, number of discs, and record number. The Periodicals section simply lists entries alphabetically by title. Regardless of section, entries are consecutively numbered. The book concludes with a general name index.
-
The websites included are solid, popular websites that are unlikely to disappear from the Internet.
-
As with all print publications that include websites, there is always the possibility of dead links.
