Everett, William A. The Musical: A Research and Information Guide. Routledge Music Bibliographies Series, London: Routledge, 2004.
-
A bibliography attempting to integrate various approaches to the musical with combinations of music and drama resource materials. Categorizes musical theater's most discernible characteristics.
-
Focus on nineteenth and twentieth century musical theater and its distinction and definition in North America. Citations from newspapers and popular and scholarly magazines. Many lesser known shows are included.
-
Bibliographic citations and annotations are organized alphabetically in ten categories with listed subcategories. Categories include: I. General Histories-writings that place musical theater in the broader contexts of theater and American opera. II. Musical Theater-focuses on the stage musical. Begins with dictionaries and encyclopedias before moving on to chronologies and general histories. III. Film Musicals IV. Works-consists of entries for individual works, year of first performance, and revivals V. Creators-lists musical creators. Arranged by category (composer, orchestrator, choreographer, and director/producer). When a person takes on more than one role, the principal references appear under whichever category comes first. Composers receive preferential treatment and are listed first. VI. Performers-writings about performers. VII. Performance-aspects of performance, composing, writing, directing. VIII. Periodicals-list of periodicals in which articles on musical theater appear. IX. Sets and Series of Printed Material-contains printed sets and series of musical theater songs and shows. X. Discography XI. Recorded Anthologies XII. Other Searchable Resources-guides the reader to other musical theater items. Concludes with an Index citing entry numbers, not page numbers. Organized alphabetically by name of performer, composer, librettist, or title of the work.
