An overview of the writings about Saint-Saëns, his music, and his milieu meant to stimulate further research on both the composer and other great musicians of his time.

Items are chosen for uniqueness, interest, and value, consist of well-known important works to lesser known ones author wishes to highlight. Time range of works included is late 19th century to late 21st century research. The bibliography consists generally of articles, monographs, biographies, lectures, and memoirs; in French, English, and German.

Book is divided into an introduction, seven chapters of bibliography, four appendixes, and three indexes. The introduction consists of a biographical sketch of Saint-Saí¬´ns, his musical style and influence, and the present state of Saint-Saí¬´ns research. Chapter 1 consists of selected general sources. Chapter 2 deals with biographical studies that are primary sources. Chapter 3 deals with biographical studies that are secondary sources. Chapter 4 devotes itself to other primary sources prior to 1921. Chapter 5 consists of specialized studies that are primary and secondary sources. Chapter 6 focuses on correspondence. Chapter 7 addresses Saint-Saëns as a writer. All entries in Chapters 1-7 are organized alphabetically by author and include complete bibliographic information, LC call number, ISBN number, and a lengthy annotation. Appendix 1 deals with manuscript sources for selected compositions. Entries are listed alphabetically by title of the individual work or collection and provide a reference to the library where it can be found and institution-given call number. Appendix 2 deals with manuscript sources for selected correspondence. Entries are listed alphabetically by addressee and provide the date, library location, and its call number. Appendix 3 deals with the Saint-Saëns Museum at the Château-Musée in Dieppe. It includes a catalog of selected materials as listed in Ambroise Millet's 1904 catalog. Appendix 4 is a selected discography arranged by genre. Entries are organized by genre according to Grove vi, and then by opus number. Included in entries are names of performers and the record label number. It concludes with an index of authors and editors, an index of composers, and an index of compositions. All indexes are organized alphabetically according to the index's function. Index of compositions are mentioned in the title of the monographs, articles, or included in the body of an annotation.

Annotations are thorough, detailed, and helpful. In the case of significant literary works by Saint-Saëns, a detailed outline of the book's contents is included. The organization permits primary sources to be located immediately from secondary or general sources, which is very helpful for any kind of research. Current.
