-
Annotated bibliography of the life and works of Gioachino Rossini.
-
Critiques and researches Rossini biographies and iconographies, historical and analytical studies of his operatic and non-operatic compositions, his personal and professional associations, the artistic milieu and venues in which he worked, and the reassessment of his role in the development of nineteenth-century music. Contents range from sources published in the early nineteenth century to works currently in progress. Material was collected from major Rossini bibliographies, drawing heavily on Philip Gossett's compilation for The New Revised New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. Other relevant books and articles were regularly searched for in a variety of international libraries and online databases. Books and articles in English, Italian, German, French and Spanish were used. Ph.D and D.M.A. dissertations were consulted. Sources used: books, relevant chapters, and articles from journals, Festschriften, and conference reports. Also used: program booklets, liner notes, and performance reviews. If the book or journals could not be accessed, their published abstract was used as noted.
-
Begins with a chronology of Rossini's life, continuing with an annotated bibliography organized in chapters with specific topics: Archives and Collections; Bibliographies and Indexes, and Catalogs; Correspondence and Documents; Iconographies and Exhibition Catalogs; Biographies and General Studies of Rossini's Career; Studies of Rossini's Contemporaries; Conference and Congress Reports; Performance History, Reception, and Locative Studies; Rossini's Historical Position and Influence; Studies of Rossini's Music; Rossini's Operas; Studies about Individual Operas; Non-operatic Works; Discographies and Videographies; Libretto Collections and Editions; Editions and Editing Practices; and Rossini Resources on the Internet. Includes four appendices: Catalog of Rossini's Compositions, Editions and Facsimiles, Critical Editions of Librettos, Locations of Premieres of Rossini's Operas, and Rossini's Librettists. Also includes an index of authors, editors, and translators and an index of works. Each chapter is organized into subcategories.
