Kidger, David M. Adrian Willaert: A Guide To Research. Routledge Music Bibliographies, ed. Brad Eden. New York: Routledge, 2005.
-
A bibliographic study of Adrian Willaert with an emphasis on source location and literature. For RISM-savy users.
-
Includes complete inventory of music prints, containing complete contents of each print. Works which are only considered as attributed to the composer must be attributed directly or in directly through another source. Works of doubtful or conflicting authorship are considered on case-by-case basis. The list of manuscripts after 1600 was compiled from the RISM A/II database. Every CD release of Willaert's music has attempted to be included. Coverage of literature includes works focusing on Willaert's music, time period, music printing of the age, anthologies in which Willaert's music features, musical genres of the time, Willaert's contemporaries, and facsimiles. Inclusion criteria appear to be relevance to understanding Willaert and his context, drawing upon dissertations, scholarly works, encyclopedias, and articles. Items are primarily in English and Italian.

Resource is divided into 10 chapters and three indexes. Chapter 1 is an introduction to the book and contains a chronology of the composer. Chapter 2 compiles Sources of Willaert's Music: Principal Prints. All entries are listed with title and RISM A/I sigla in chronological order with complete descriptive information where appropriate on each print. Reprints contain only title and sigla. Chapter 3 compiles Sources of Willaert's Music: Print Anthologies, inventorying works attributed to Willaert in at least one source and works transmitted anonymously in print anthologies. Entries are organized in chronological order and listed reprints are not given with title or sigla. Chapter 4 compiles Sources of Willaert's Music: Manuscripts before 1600. Entries are organized alphabetically by Census Catalog library sigla. Beneath each library heading, items are listed with title and worklist number. Chapter 5 is a works list of Willaert's compositions, including all music ascribed to him and works where conflicting ascriptions include Willaert. It is subdivided into ten categories, each designated by a letter A-J: Masses and Individual Mass Movements, Motets, Psalms, Hymns, Other Liturgical Music, Chansons and Tenorlieder, Madrigals, Other Vocal Music with Italian Text, Instrumental, and Arrangements of Other Composer's Music by Willaert. Each category is subdivided further according to number of voices. Entries are organized alphabetically by title and include title, print sigla, location of manuscripts, edition, and notes. Doubtful or misattributed works are listed at end of each category, assigned lower-case letters to distinguish. Chapter 6 compiles Sources of Willaert's Music: Arrangements of Willaert's Music. It is organized chronologically by publication date with items designated by the letter K. Entries are organized by RISM B/I worklist number. Chapter 7 compiles manuscripts of Willaert's music after 1600. Items are designated by the letter L. Entries are alphabetically organized by city and library, then by RISM number. Sources are not included in Chapter 5. Chapter 8 compiles an annotated bibliography of modern editions published after 1800. Items are designated by the letter M. The chapter is subdivided into categories similar to Chapter 5 and beneath these categories, entries are essentially organized alphabetically by author, providing bibliographic information and, if author sees necessary, annotation. Opera Omnia entries include a table which consists of title, number within book, and page number. Chapter 9 is an annotated bibliography of literature, subdivided into twenty categories. Items are designated by the letter N. Entries are organized alphabetically by author and include complete bibliographic information with annotations. Some entries also include RILM and ISBN numbers. Chapter 10 is a discography; items designated by the letter P. Entries are organized alphabetically by performer and include complete bibliographic information, and extensive annotations. The resource concludes with four indexes: Titles in Latin, Titles in Italian, Titles in French, and Index of Names (Authors and Editors). Each is organized alphabetically by title.
-
When searching through the indexes, the number-lettering system utilized aids the identification of items without locating it within the book. The bibliography of literature is also excellent for understanding the composer as an individual and in his context.
-
The majority of the book, with the exception of Chapters 9 and 10, is difficult to navigate without familiarity with RISM and heavy consultation of the indexes. By attempting to include a complete discography, it has the potential to become shortly outdated.
