Post, Jennifer C. Ethnomusicology: A Research and Information Guide. 2nd ed. Routledge Music Bibliographies. New York; London: Taylor & Francis, 2011.
-
This book is intended, in the author's own words, to help researchers 'embrace the discipline in the twenty-first century,' and consequently provides a detailed guide to various sources profitable to ethnomusicological research.
-
This book contains 1933 items, consisting of printed books, reference works, archival sources, journal articles, discographies, audio and video recordings, online resources, encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, research guides, indexing and abstracting tools, and dissertations. No specific inclusion criteria is specified by the author; however, the vast majority of included items appear to have been published between 1990 and 2010. Most of the literature included also appears to be primarily in English.
-
The book is divided into four parts: the introduction, the bibliography proper, a name index, and a subject index. The introduction describes at length the field of ethnomusicology, its purposes, its methodology, and provides a 52-item annotated bibliography regarding the discipline and its literature. The bibliography proper then begins, divided into two parts. Part 1 (Reference and Information Sources) and Part 2 (Sources for Research and Study) are further divided into four chapters apiece. Each chapter concerns itself with a particular publication type such as encyclopedias, discographies, journals, etc. Then, within each chapter, entries first grouped topically and then geographically. Within these grouping, entries finally integrated alphabetically by author or title. Each entry in the bibliography is annotated and provides a full bibliographic citation and, where appropriate, an ISBN, ISSN, or LC call number. All entries, regardless of chapter, are consecutively numbered. Also worth noting is the audio recording chapter, which provides a list of significant studios producing recordings useful to the ethnomusicologist. Studios are organized alphabetically, then list physical address, URL, phone numbers, and a description of their contributions to the field. The book concludes with two cross-referenced indexes. The Name Index alphabetically lists authors, editors, compilers, producers, and directors. The Subject Index is self-explanatory and also organized alphabetically.
-
The annotations for recent books are unusually descriptive, often including a list of contents. Beginning ethnomusicology students will especially benefit from in depth descriptions of research methodologies and research strategies.
