Saffle, Michael. Richard Wagner, A Guide to Research. Routledge Music Bibliographies. New York and London: Routledge, 2002.
-
A guide to locating research about Wagner as a composer, performer, music dramatist, etc. with annotated sources.
-
Most sources are from the 1900's, however some date earlier. There are 450 pages of 1,175 numbered citations. Sources are chosen based on six criteria. The first five consider the requirements for selecting annotations of those books, monographs, anthologies, editions, and articles that 1. were of outstanding quality or interest; 2. reflected the results of recent researches; 3. were written in English or had appeared in English-language editions; 4. reported on various topics in Wagner scholarship, not simply biographical or musical ones; and 5. contained the word(s) Wagner, Wagnerian, Wagnerism(s), or the name of one of Wagner's works in their titles or subtitles. The sixth criteria involved selecting studies that as a whole represented as many phases and aspects of Wagner scholarship as possible. A wide variety of sources were included: periodicals, programs, booklets, dictionaries, lexicons, handbooks, collections, exhibition catalogs, and more.
-
Chapters are organized into sections. For example, the chapter Researching Wagner has a section entitled Musical Catalogs and Related Studies. Annotations are no more than one paragraph, providing information about the contents of the source and citing page numbers. Each item separately identified and described is assigned a number. Cross-references items are identified by asterisks.
-
A great reference for gathering sources pertaining to specific facets of Wagner's life and related subjects. The annotations are also helpful, establishing the content of the source.
-
As the author admits, there are thousands of Wagner sources out there. This reference is quite incomplete, listing only those sources the author finds worthy of inclusion.
