Simms, Bryan R. Alban Berg: Research and Information Guide. 2nd ed. Routledge Music Bibliographies, edited by Jennifer C. Post. New York, London: Routledge, 2009.
-
Provides those researching Alban Berg’s life and works with a list of quality articles and books in which they can find past research and information.
-
Cites about 1,300 books, dissertations, and articles on the life and works of Alban Berg. Also includes a selection of reviews on early performances of Berg’s works, including the 1925 premiere of his opera Wozzeck and the 1937 premiere of Lulu, and reviews that report on research. Excludes: unpublished materials except for dissertations, reviews (except those mentioned above), theses and academic papers (except for published Ph.D dissertations), very brief articles, articles in daily newspapers, articles in popular or general-readership magazines, articles from program booklets or theater or concert periodicals, material from textbooks, record liner notes, lexicographic notices (except for the most often used ones), most articles in Asian languages, discussions in books or articles that do not primarily focus on Berg (e.g. books on Schoenberg, the Second Viennese School), and items published after 2007. Since major literature indexes-most importantly RILM-were not available for writings published after about 2005, it is likely that some articles concerning Berg that were published in 2006 and 2007 have been omitted.
-
Consists of a preface, a chart of abbreviations of major music periodicals, the main body, and a set of indexes. The main body begins with a chapter containing a brief biography of Berg, survey of his works, and discussion of trends in research. The next two chapters contain chronological lists of all of Berg’s published compositions and writings about music. Chapters 4 to 9 contain citations of writings about Berg in the following categories: Wozzeck, Lulu, chamber music, orchestral music, songs, and Berg’s life and works. Each of these six chapters has two subsections: writings about the work of Berg, and video recordings. Entries are in a standard annotated bibliographic format and are arranged alphabetically by author, or by title if an author’s name is unavailable. Indexed by authors, editors, translators, reviewers, arrangers, and poets, and subjects.
