Wentzel, Wayne C. Samuel Barber: A Guide to Research. Routledge Music Bibliographies. New York: Routledge, [2001].
-
A survey of available research on the life and works of Samuel Barber, providing an extensive bibliography and discography.
-
Necessarily selective in scope. Every document was provided in universities and libraries in America but Karen Rose Gonon the director at the American Academy in Rome provided all the documents on Barber's association with the Academy. There are two biographies, one from the early 1950s, and another from the early 1980s after his death. Only materials written in English are included. Most of the research citations updates and reorganizes the Bio-Bibliography of Barber compiled by Don Hennessee.
-
The bibliography section starts with general material on the composer and his music, including books dissertations, and general articles. The discography section is even more selective. It contains listings of classic recordings. Also included are brief references to record reviews both from representative magazines and The New York Times. These first chapters are updating and reorganization of the Bio-Bibliography of Barber. The next chapters go beyond the scope of Hennessee's book. Chapter 5 is a list of most of Barber's manuscripts. Finally, chapter 6 is devoted to the correspondence between Barber and other twentieth-century music figures, including composers conductors, and friends.
