Zank, Stephen. Maurice Ravel: A Guide to Research. Routledge Music Bibliographies, ed. Brad Eden. New York and London: Routledge, 2005.
-
A guide to the life, works, time period, and writings from or about Ravel. Important guide for the student and researcher interested in Ravel. Also helpful guide for the individual interested in the music world during Ravel's time period as it gives a chronology of events related to music and Ravel during the years of his life.

Cites from sources in all the major languages. Vast coverage of topics covering major sources in any way related to Ravel. The author admittedly apologizes for the more recent and valuable contributions he had missed since this was published. Articles, Dissertations, Discographies, Essays, Contributions within Books, Journals, Periodicals, and Correspondence are among many types of sources researched and cited.
-
Divided essentially into three parts: 1) an historically oriented and contextual introduction, 2) a critical and informed distillation of all secondary literature concerning Ravel in the major bibliographic formats and Western research languages from the time of the composer's death until the turn of the 21st century, and 3) a critical and informed interpretation of contemporary criticism and reception followed by a catalog of works and illumination of the composer's correspondence and musical manuscripts in the major research centers, worldwide, holding primary sources. Nearly all sources are presented in ascending historical order suggesting a wish to go back as far as possible to consider what has come before as much as possible. Contents divided into 3 major topics, covering multiple sub topics, and sub-headings within each of those sub-topics. Sub-topics are discussed by related sub-headings which, when applicable, are the same under each sub-topic. These similar sub-headings include: Works-Repertories and Genres, Performance Practice, Correspondence, Reception, Discographies, Ravel's life, and Ravel's health. Citations organized chronologically according to the date of publication. Each citation includes a brief critique of the source. The four practical Indexes include an Author Index, Proper Names Index, Works Index, and Subject Index.
-
Useful indexes for guidance in major angles of study.
-
Author acknowledges that the pruning required to complete this work was personal, though hopefully reasonably prudent, if not infallible.
