To fulfill the need for a good bibliographical source on African music. Other such reference sources or their authors are incomplete, heavily biased against the music, had insufficient recording equipment, or were not knowledgeable enough about music research to compile a reliable source on African music sources. Helpful in gaining an overview of the history of African music as well.
-
Sources included address the native music of Africa. Books, recordings, illustrations, treatises, and articles published prior to 1936 are included. Sources are in various languages, but primarily English, French, and German. There are no sources written by native Africans. The geographic region most covered in this work is the part of Africa that is south of the Sahara, with the Negro and Bantu cultures receiving particular attention.
-
Contents are organized as follows: Native Music in Africa Generally; Native Musical Instruments in Africa Generally; Native Music in AfricaSpecific Countries; African Survivals in the New World (U.S., West Indies, South America); African Music and the Church; Drum Language; Collection of Material and Phonograph Recording; Classification and Arrangement of Material; List of Museums Containing Instruments; Bibliographies; Author Index. Sources are arranged geographically and then alphabetically by author. Each bibliographic citation contains the basic needed information with brief annotations. In the citations, if the place of publication is not mentioned, it was published in London.

There are some inconsistencies that show there is a need for even more authoritative guidance on the subject. None of the sources originate in Africa.
