-
Comprises Duke Ellington’s musical catalog from the first recording session in July 1923 to his last concert in March 1974. Includes studio recordings, movie soundtracks, concerts, dance dates, radio broadcasts, telecasts, and private and unissued recordings, as well as recordings made by Ellington’s sidemen under their own names or with other bands. Includes 78s, 45s, LPs, and CDs.
-
This publication has two main sections followed by several indexes. The first section, which encompasses the main body of the book, is comprised of a chronological listing of recordings of Duke Ellington. Each entry in the listing includes date, location, and personnel; label of first issue; master and take numbers (if available); and song title, including alternate titles and derivations. The second section is a chronological listing of the recordings of “The Ellingtonians” (people who stayed with the Ellington organization for any length of time and made a significant contribution to the style and/or general performance of the band). The indexes include: an index of titles; an index of musicians; a general index, which contains all names of persons who are mentioned in the book but are not included in the index of musicians; a listing of cities and venues; and a list of air dates, both on radio and television.
-
Extensive scope. The variety of indexes makes information easy to find in the 600+ page book. A “Guide for Users” also helps with ease of navigation.
