Phonographische Zeitschrift (1900-1938)
-
The Phonographische Zeitschrift (PZ) with its two successors Phonographische und Radio-Zeitschrift and Phonographische, Radio- und Musikinstrumenten-Zeitschrift (PRZ) was published from 1900 to 1938 with a total of more than 34,000 pages. As a 'professional journal for the entire music and speech machine industry' (subtitles until 1933), it represents a unique source of text and images on phonography in the first third of the 20th century. The PZ contains material of high information value on the technical, repertoire and economic history of the phonographic industry and is highly relevant for music, media, cultural, economic and copyright historical issues. Since most of the German corporate archives of the phonographic industry did not exist during the two last world wars and afterwards due to extensive cassations, the information preserved in the PZ cannot be replaced by any other source. As a trade journal, the PZ also contains lists of new releases by record companies. These are an important source for the dating of historical industrial sound carriers and often provide more precise information about the various label catalogues. Due to the inferior quality paper used in times of war, inflation and crisis, parts of the PZ are in such a precarious state of preservation that they are no longer available for regular use. In Germany there are only two almost complete copies, which are kept in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin - Preußischer Kulturbesitz and in the library of the Deutsches Museum in Munich. All volumes from 1900 to 1938 have been digitized except the missing volumes 1921, 1923, 1927 and 1932. For copyright reasons, not all volumes can yet be made publicly accessible. (from the website)
