Leizime Brusoe (1870-1949) scrapbook
-
An extraordinary fiddler, Leizime Brusoe performed from the 1880s to the 1940s, from Canadian dancing schools to radio and live shows in the Midwest, and lastly for barn dances in Wisconsin's Rhinelander area. Considered one of the best by legendary folklorist Alan Lomax, this champion fiddle player was recorded in 1937 by Sidney Robertson Cowell, and Helene Stratman Thomas in 1940 and 1941. These field recordings can be heard through the Wisconsin Folk Song Collection. Thanks to the generosity of the Brusoe family, this fascinating scrapbook was loaned for scanning and now presented here. With photos, newspaper clippings, programs and business letters, these pages give a glimpse of Leizime Brusoe's life circa 1925 to 1935. This spans the time from Brusoe's winning the Chicago Herald and Examiner old-time fiddle contest, to his Midwest tours with Rube Tronson and his Texas Cowboys, and their performances on the WLS radio show National Barn Dance.
