Foley, Edward, ed. Worship Music: A Concise Dictionary. Collegeville, Minn.: The Liturgical Press, [2000].
-
A dictionary for those doing research on the musical worship practices of North American Christian or Jewish faiths as an introductory source.
-
Covers musical terms and topics important to the worship practices of various faiths in North America. Only includes music terminology if it is important to worship practice or rituals. Contains entries on composers, performers and scholars who have shaped the music of various faiths.
-
Entries are listed alphabetically. Entries for composers, performers or other persons are integrated with entries for terms. Persons are listed by last name. The dictionary provides a definition of each term. If the entry is a person, birth and death dates are given followed by a summary of the individual's connection with religious music. Entries do not include works lists or bibliographies.
-
There seems to be an emphasis on Christian and Jewish faiths therefore excluding coverage of eastern faiths such as Islam or Buddhism that may be practiced in North America. Entries are very brief; there is no standard format for the presentation of information.
