Vidali, Carole F. Allesandro and Domenico Scarlatti: A Guide to Research. Garland Composer Resource Manuals, ed. Guy A. Marco. Vol. 34. New York: Garland Publishing, Inc., 1993.
-
A guide on Alessandro and Domenico Scarlatti on the subject of their personal lives, works, and milieu that is historically significant, up-to-date, representative of all viewpoints, and addresses problems within the research. Intended for musicology students, performers, and music teachers beginning research on the Scarlattis.

Bibliography consists of significant recent books, articles, and dissertations. The time frame of literature is approximately 1960 to 1985, but a few earlier studies of major importance are included. Does not include separate works lists, instead directing readers to ones already published. Works lists referenced are chosen because they are the most up-to-date, accurate, informative, or historically important. In the case of Domenico, there is an effort to include the most recent publications coinciding with the 300th anniversary of his birthday. Surviving manuscripts are not cited. Discography selections are both in and out of print.

Divided into separate two books: Book 1 is devoted to Alessandro Scarlatti (253 pages), Book 2 is devoted to Domenico Scarlatti. Both books are divided into a preface/introduction, six chapters, and three indexes. In Book 1, the preface/introduction describes the current state of Alessandro research. Chapter 1 deals with composer's life and works, divided into four sections: biographical material and conference proceedings, the Scarlatti family, cultural and aesthetic background, and his relationship to Handel other composers. Chapter 2 deals with studies of his music, divided into two sections: vocal music and instrumental music. Chapter 3 deals with performance background, divided into two sections: performance practice and modern performances. Chapter 4 deals with Alessandro sources such as works lists, catalogs, bibliographies, etc. Chapter 5 deals with Alessandro's works in modern edition or facsimile, divided into two sections: vocal music and instrumental music. Chapter 6 is a discography, divided into two sections: vocal music and instrumental music. In Book 2, the preface/introduction describes current state of Domenico research. Chapter 1 deals with composer's life and works, divided into four sections: 1) biographies, comprehensive studies, and essay collections; 2) anniversary publications, 3) cultural milieu, and 4) Domenico's relationship to other composers and Spanish folk music. Chapter 2 deals with studies of the composer's music, divided in vocal music and keyboard works. Chapter 3 deals with performance background, divided into three sections: performance practice, editions, and modern performances. Chapter 4 deals with sources (see Book 1 Chapter 4). Chapter 5 is Modern Editions or Facsimiles, divided between vocal music and instrumental music. Chapter 6 deals with discography. Both books individually conclude with a separate index of authors, index of names, and index of compositions. All chapters are subdivided into related subheadings under which entries are organized alphabetically. Chapters 1-4 ordered by author's name. Chapters 5-6 are ordered by title. Each bibliographic entry includes complete bibliographic information and most are annotated. Discography entries include performers, recording format, and label numbers.
-
Two separate books in one.
-
The tables of contents are sometimes misleading as to what the section actually contains. Book 2, for example, claims to have a works list in spite of claiming not to include any; but it is, in reality, a list of modern editions for various compositions.
