Orrey, Leslie and Gilbert Chase. The encyclopedia of opera. London: Pitman, 1976.
-
Encyclopedia of basic opera information for the opera enthusiast. Good quick reference of terms, people, and operatic works.
-
By no means comprehensive, this guide includes information on opera that the editor felt was most pertinent in today's world. Romantic and modern operas are featured most prominently, as well as older operas of particular historical significance, and those that have had revivals. Composers, performers and other people of the opera are included but some of the old has been omitted to leave space for the newer and more recent. An attempt has been made to cover US, Canadian, Latin American, Russian and other lesser known operas. This has lead to less coverage of some of the more well known works.
-
Entries are listed alphabetically. Composers, performers, terms and works are all integrated. Brief biographies are given for people of the opera including dates of birth and death, where known, as well as a list of operas for composers and important roles for performers. Entries for operas vary greatly. Some include a list of characters and a plot summary; others have only the composer and premiere dates. Entries for roles include the voice part of each and the opera(s) of origin.
-
Interesting photographs are included.
-
Because this was a collaborative effort, the information included in entries varies greatly. It was published in 1976 and some of the information is dated including references to the USSR.
