Rezits, Joseph and Gerald Deatsman. The Pianist's Resource Guide: Piano Music in Print and Literature on the Pianist Art. Park Ridge, Illinois: Pallma Music Corp./Neil A. Kjos Jr., Publisher, 1974.
-
A guide to literature and music for and about all aspects of the piano; intended specifically for performers, pedagogues, researchers, librarians, and music publishers and dealers.
-
Estimated coverage of literature is 2,100 books in English covering 200 years. For the most part, only published works are listed, emphasizing literature for younger readers. Only composers with substantial piano music contributions are represented. Excluded are books relating to the organ, music history, music appreciation, works of a general nature, and methods books. Within the critical evaluations made by Joseph Rezits, 118 books of professional or historical interest are included with the criteria intended to represent variety of categories and different periods.

The guide is partitioned into four parts and an appendix. Part 1 is Piano Music in Print, consisting of a composer index and a title index, both alphabetically arranged. Composer index entries are classified by genre, and detail the composer, editor, title, publisher, grade level, edition number, and price. Title index entries include the title and, if available in the publisher's catalogue, the composer/editor/arranger. Part 2 is Literature on the Pianistic Art, divided into four indexes, organized alphabetically. Author index entries include complete bibliographic information in a non-traditional format, library codes where books can be found, and a physical description and classification code generally describing the nature of content. Classification index entries are classified by content, and then alphabetized by author. Sub-classification index entries are alphabetical by author, classified according to 124 different sub classifications. Part 3 is Piano Reader's Guide, divided into a Critical Evaluations chapter and a topical index. Critical evaluations are listed alphabetical by author and include complete bibliographic citation. Entries in the topical index are alphabetically integrated. Part 4 is a Publishers Index, listed alphabetically by company name and includes contact information. It concludes with an appendix, which consists of an alphabetical master code list.
-
Extensive coverage. The pages in the appendix come thoughtfully in duplicate and intended for removal in order to facilitate effective use of this guide.
-
The music in print section is grossly outdated to 1974, specifically with regard to prices, the available selection from publishers, and publishers still in business. Also, information regarding a piece's difficulty comes from publishers' catalogs, so all ratings are subjective and non-standard. Within the literature section, physical description and content classification of books are conveyed entirely in two-character codes, making the whole reference awkward to comprehend and requires frequent reference to the appendix. In short, it is a headache to navigate.
