Demsey, David and Ronald Prather. Alec Wilder: A Bio-Bibliography. Bio-Bibliographies in Music, ed. Donald L. Hixon. No. 45. Westport: Greenwood Press, 1993.
-
A guide to the life and works of Alec Wilder with the intention of bringing the composer's work to a wider audience and assist those seeking information by and about Wilder.
-
The discography comprises commercially produced phonograph recordings and original 79 rpm recordings. The bibliography comprises books, reviews of compositions and books, articles, album liner notes, biographical entries in larger reference works, and obituaries. The ancillary materials section documents unpublished works, music manuscripts, musical sketches, personal papers, and national public radio programs. Items are all in English and originate predominantly from United States sources.
-
The resource is divided into five sections (biography, works and performance lists, discography, bibliography, and ancillary materials), three appendixes, and an index. Entry numbers are prefixed by a section-unique letter. Entries in the works and performance lists and the discography are classified by genre, and then arranged alphabetically by title. For each work or performance, entries provide composition date, publisher, duration, dedication, and dates and locations of premieres and performances when available. Discography entries include recording artists, record label and number, and the album title if the entire album is devoted to Wilder's works. Bibliography entries are classified into categories pertaining to publication format, and then, in some categories, classified again by the composition focused upon. The method of organization differs with each category, but each entry has complete bibliographic citation and an annotation. Ancillary materials entries are organized in the same fashion as the bibliography. Each entry provides a description of the item and whom it was a gift from. Appendix I is a list of awards and dedications. Appendix II is a chronological list of compositions. Appendix III is a director of music publishers. It concludes with an alphabetical name index. All sections are heavily cross-referenced.
-
Significant and relevant materials in the Alec Wilder Archive and the National Public Radio Library are documented. Annotations are extensive and helpful. The letter-number system of identification makes it easy to determine the nature of an item when searching through the indexes and is helpful for following material about a composition across genre.
-
The method of entry organization in Sections 4 and 5 is unnecessarily awkward.
