Peterson, Carolyn Sue, and Ann D. Fenton. Index to Children's Songs: A Title, First Line, and Subject Index. New York: The H. H. Wilson Company, 1979.
-
This index is intended for use by librarians, teachers, music instructors, parents, and young people themselves. The Index is helpful for those familiar with children's song as well as those with no background who intend to research song titles by topic.
-
The Index includes over 5,000 songs and variations from 298 books published between 1909 and 1977. Peterson and Fenton included songs from books that are out of print and some from other catalogues and collections. Foreign language songs are also included.
-
A detailed explanatory Preface begins the Index. It is arranged in three main parts: the List of Books Indexed, Title and First Line, and Subject Index. The List of Books Indexed, arranged alphabetically by author, includes complete bibliographic information and a location code for each entry. The Title and First Line section is also arranged alphabetically, mixing titles and first lines, with the first lines italicized. Each listing includes the location code and page number for the corresponding book in the List of Books Indexed. Variations on songs are treated separately or with see also. The Subject Index includes song titles only, arranged alphabetically, with over 1,000 subject headings and cross-references. The Index includes a Broad Topic Guide for researchers with less specific topics in mind.
-
The index is clearly organized and thoroughly explained in the preface. It has multiple points of access, both for broad and specific research information.
-
The book is dated, and many of the sources in the List of Books Indexed are currently out of print or difficult to access.
