-

-
The selection criterion is books and articles containing the most relevant and significant information on African music and dance in the eyes of the author. No other music outside the African continent is considered with the exception of some sources on Afro-Cuban music.
-
The work contains the following main sections: table of contents, introduction, list of countries, bibliography proper, list of abbreviations, and indexes. The introduction briefly explains the coverage, organization, and classification conventions. The proceeding bibliography is organized into six major sections: 1) General reference materials and music histories dealing with tribal music studies and music classification. 2) Sources addressing African music as a whole. 3) Sources addressing music in specific geographic locations, grouped by country. 4) Sources addressing musical instruments, divided into three parts: General, Geographically Arranged, and Instrument Types. 5) Sources addressing dance, divided into two parts: General and Geographically Arranged. 6) Catalogues and bibliographies (in two sub-sections: Bibliographies of Africana Likely to be of Use to the Student; Bibliographies Related to Specific Countries), Periodicals (in two sub-sections: Periodicals Concerned Specifically With Music or Dancing; Other Periodicals Consulted), and Abbreviations (alphabetical by the first letter of the abbreviation). Entries are organized alphabetically by author’s name, contain complete bibliographic information, and are cross-referenced to other related entries. Entries are also concurrently numbered, regardless of section. The volume concludes with three indexes: Author, Geographic Location (topical), Ethnicity (topical).
