Turner, J. Rigbie. Four Centuries of Opera: Manuscripts and Printed Editions in the Pierpont Morgan Library. New York: Dover Publications, Inc., 1983.
-
A brief history of opera illustrated by items found in the New York Pierpont Morgan Library, commemorating a 1983 exhibition.
-
50 examples of libretti, rare editions, sketches, and manuscripts are included, which span from the birth of opera to about 1978. Examples are a blend of the obscure alongside well-known repertoire, selected for importance, rarity, or unusual characteristics. Works are drawn from mostly French, German, and Italian composers with a few from America and England, one Russian composer.
-
The main portion of the book is prefaced by an introduction, and an alphabetical list of composers and librettists featured in the book. The text and corresponding images of the selection proceed in approximately chronological order. It is followed by two lists: a selective checklist of opera manuscripts found in the library and a selective check list of printed operas and librettos. Entries in the checklists are listed alphabetically by author/composer. It concludes with a bibliography.
-
Juxtaposition of prose with unique images brings a sense of reality to what would otherwise be an average history of opera.
-
Not intended to be a comprehensive or even representative history of opera. It has more value as a commemorative souvenir.
