To find information and stories on the operas and their composers in the current standard repertory.
-
Operas range from the Baroque to the twentieth-century. All are a part of the standard repertory and have been performed at the Metropolitan Opera House.
-
Composers are listed in alphabetical order. A short biography is given for each composer and under each composer is listed their most frequently performed operas. Date of world, U.S., and Metropolitan Opera premieres are given. The librettist is listed and names and voice parts of all characters. Summaries of each act are then given, with reference to famous arias and ensemble numbers. The first volume lists the more common operas up to 1984. The second volume addresses operas popularized between 1984 and 1997. Each volume has a content page listing the operas by alphabetical order.
-
The organization is especially useful for those looking to become familiar with all standard opera repertory.
-
When wanting to simply look up one opera by name the contents page is somewhat buried.
