Doscher, Barbara. From Studio to Stage: Repertoire for the Voice. Edited and annotated by John Nix. Lanham, Maryland and London: The Scarecrow Press Inc., 2002.
-
A detailed reference guide to a wide variety of repertoire for the solo voice intended for singers, and teachers of singing as a resource for choosing appropriate repertoire for the singer in the studio and the recital.
-
Catalogues repertoire notes from one teacher of singing over thirty years. Criteria for inclusion is simply Doscher's personal preferences of repertoire for the solo voice spanning a wide range of genres, languages, and the entire range of historical periods of western music.
-
The reference is organized by chapters. Composer, title, and range indexes, and a bibliography are included at the end. Annotations within the chapters are listed alphabetically by composer name. Chapters include: Art Song in English; Folk Songs and Spirituals; Art Songs in Italian; Lieder; Melodie; Music Theatre Selections; Operatic Selections; Recital Groups; Spanish Art Songs; Russian Art Songs; Voice with Orchestra; and Solo Cantatas. Songs by each composer are then listed alphabetically as subheadings and annotated with the following information: title, language, poet, range, tessitura, tempo, comments, difficulty level, voice types, synopsis of text, and commonly found editions.
-
A very valuable resource for selecting a wide range of repertoire for the performer or the student. Comments on the difficulty level, range and tessitura are especially helpful for the teacher in selecting repertoire for students. The many categories of repertoire are very helpful for a well-rounded repertoire base.
-
There is no real basis for the criteria for inclusion other than the authors' personal preferences, so the listing is very selective and incomplete. Incipits could make the reference even more helpful.
