Hinson, Maurice, and Wesley Roberts. The Piano in Chamber Ensemble: An Annotated Guide. 2d ed. Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 2006.
-
Intended to help performers, teachers, librarians, and music dealers become aware of the vast repertoire of the piano in chamber music. It provides information on what music is available, what that music is like, and from where that music can be obtained.
-
This book catalogues chamber music with piano from approximately 1700 to the present, but with a large emphasis on contemporary music. The source contains chamber music with eight or fewer instruments (including the piano or earlier predecessors to the piano), with an original (not transcribed) piano part equal to the significance and difficulty of the other parts. This work thoroughly catalogues works by all “standard” composers, as well as composers of merit that are less-well known, particularly American composers. In addition, this source lists both published and unpublished compositions, whether or not those compositions are currently in print.
-
Organized into sections based on instrumentation. Within each section, there is an integrated organization by alphabetizing by composers’ last names. Within each composer’s listing, within the instrumentation sections, the works are listed by opus number, title, or musical form, depending on the composer. Each piece’s brief entry has a description that contains information on general style, form, and technical difficulties for the pianist; a grading of difficulty of the piano part; and details of the composition, including the date of composition, publisher information, copyright information, the number of pages, the performance time of the work, and the titles of the various movements. At the end of the work, there is a brief annotated bibliography (with complete bibliographic entries) on suggested readings on the subject, as well as several indexes, including an index of works for two or more pianos with other instruments, an index of works by female composers, and an index of composers.
-
A list of abbreviations clarifies all abbreviations used throughout the book. The volume contains a list of addresses of music publishers, so that those using the book can locate the music directly from the publisher if necessary. This source is quite up-to-date, and the second edition includes not only works published since the previous edition, but also additional works that were not included in the earlier edition, no matter the date of composition.
