Weerasinghe, Lali, ed. Directory of Recorded Sound Resources in the United Kingdom. London: The British Library National Sound Archive, 1989.
-
A resource for those seeking commercial and/or non-commercial sound recordings within the United Kingdom. Intended to make hundreds of sound recording collections more accessible to researchers, broadcasters, teachers, and to the general public. Provides the user with the places, contacts, and general subject matter of each collection.
-
Includes 489 different collections of recorded sound in the United Kingdom. Entries are selected from a nationwide survey conducted in 1984 by the British Library National Sound Archive. This directory covers a great variety of collections, ranging from national collections with millions of items to small collections with only four or five hours of recordings. Excluded from the guide are collections of commercial recordings in public libraries, commercial record companies' archives, and local radio stations that keep material for internal use only. Otherwise, coverage is extensive. Included in the directory are other collections of commercial recordings, oral history projects, tapes of council meetings, recordings particular to geographic locations, local musical performances, wildlife recordings, recordings intended for disables persons, and various other privately recorded events/interviews.
-
The directory is organized alphabetically by county (Avon to Yorkshire), with listings at the end for Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Within each county category, entries are sub-arranged by collection name. The user may also find entries simply by collection name using the alphabetical listing provided before the main directory. An integrated index at the end also allows the user to search on a regional or non-regional basis for collections that cover specific topics, genres, events, people, and places. Organization within each entry is clear. The address and telephone number is listed, followed by a name or position to which inquiries should be directed. Access information is explained (whether access is limited to members, serious researchers, and if prior arrangements must be made.) General content of each collection is explained under the categories of oral history, spoken literature, accent/dialect, languages, spoken word misc. (includes lectures, meetings, conference proceedings etc.), music, wildlife, transport, machinery, and miscellaneous.
-
Emphasizes the importance of sound recordings as social and cultural documents. The directory is easy to use, allowing for research by region or by topic. Bold type makes each entry and subheading clear and easy to read, and enough information is given to guide the user to the proper place to learn more.
-
Only a general idea of the contents of each collection can be ascertained from this guide. Contact must be made with the specific institution or collector to obtain more information. The directory is not outdated for the subject matter, but more recent information such as websites and e-mail addresses are not provided.
