Russell, Tony, and Chris Smith. The Penguin Guide to Blues Recordings. With Neil Slaven, Ricky Russell, and Joe Faulkner. London: Penguin Books, 2006.
-
Intended to aid those interested in Blues music find recordings by established blues artists, or in compilations of blues music.
-
Contains recordings by over one thousand musicians who have primarily worked in the mainstream blues idiom, not newer developments such as “21st-century blues,” “punk blues,” or “nu blues,” or those who work primarily in the soul or Gospel idioms. In the case of crossover artists, only those who recorded primarily for blues labels are included. This discography only includes recordings that are currently available on CD. The majority of the recordings covered are from the United States and Great Britain.
-
The majority of the volume is arranged alphabetically by artist. Each artist’s entry contains a listing of currently available recordings, in the order in which they were made. Each recording has a star rating (from one to four) regarding the performance, not recording quality. In addition, each recording entry has the title, label, catalogue number, participating musicians (with their instruments), and the date or date span of the recording by month and year. Following the catalogue information, there is a paragraph about the recording, discussing the artist(s), recording quality, and specific tracks on the CD. Following the artist-organized section, there is a shorter section arranged alphabetically by compilation title. The entries in this section follow the same format as those from the artist section. An alphabetically arranged index of artists, lyricists, and musicians concludes the volume.
-
The layout is very clear. It is very easy to find a recording by a desired artist. The introduction includes a very clear description of what each aspect of an entry means and includes a list of abbreviations of instruments.
