About 1,300 preselected recordings are featured to represent a current thought expressed in reviews and articles. Excludes white blues, white soul and most jazz.

Organized in divisions by anthologies, different stylings, different time periods, different instrumentation and vocal techniques. Each contains an explanatory narrative essay with short musicological descriptions, definitions, brief histories, roots of development and progressions, and a discussion on the literature-meaning reviews, articles, and books. Each album has a correlating number. Information listed includes: name of artist, title, label, last known serial number, and country of origin. The end of the book features a directory of specialty stores and label addresses. Annotations in this book average about 300 words and states why the specific record and/or material is important.
