A history of printed American music in the form of item listings. Useful to collectors, dealers and researchers of old American printed music.
-
Printed music from all phases of American history from 1768 to 1889; includes music for the presidents; music of the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Civil War; music from the California gold rush; and music pertaining to numerous political and social issues. All examples included were extant at the time of publication (1941). Not intended to be a complete listing, rather a cross-section of the more interesting and important items.

Divided into four parts. The first part is a classified listing of the music. Aside from the first subsection (music about the presidents of the U. S.) the subsections are chronological divisions. Within these chronological subsections, the listings are organized further by subject. Under each subject heading, music listings are presented alphabetically by title. Each entry names the composer, year and place of printing, and lyricist (if different from composer). A brief physical description of the music print follows. Often other facts of interested are presented. Part II of this guide is a directory of early American music publishers, organized alphabetically by company name. Dates of operation and addresses are given, divided into periods if the company ever changed its name or address. Part III lists lithographers and artists who worked on American sheet music before 1870. These are listed alphabetically by the city in which they worked. The name of the lithography company is given, as well as a list of artists who worked for them. Part IV follows the bibliography; it contains over thirty photographs of sheet music. An index concludes the work; it contains authors, titles, composers, publishers, lithographers, artists, and categories mentioned in the guide.
