Axford, Elizabeth C. Traditional World Music Influences in Contemporary Solo Piano Literature: A Selected Bibliographic Survey and Review. Lanham, Maryland and London: The Scarecrow Press, Inc., 1997.

Multicultural repertoire guide for pianists, composers, music teachers and students, world music enthusiasts and scholars. Valuable to people who want to increase awareness of some of the piano literature available that could be used in the study and teaching of world music and cross-cultural influences.

The author indicates that this book is everything but Bach, Beethoven and Brahms. It includes pieces which use or attempt to emulate non-Western scales, modes, folk tunes, rhythmic, percussive or harmonic devices and timbres. She identifies those pieces in the contemporary solo piano literature which show world music influences not traditionally associated with the standard repertoire of Western European Art Music. Ensemble or orchestral literature, Broadway musicals, contemporary popular music and music from film and television are excluded.

Each chapter is organized under broad geographical area. Each chapter begins with a summary listing which musical influences are most commonly found in the contemporary solo piano literature representative of the area and how these are interpreted on the piano. The selected compositions and collections with the date of composition and publication, publisher, page length and duration are included in alphabetical order by composer's last name. Each piece or collection listed is designated as Easy, Easy-Intermediate, Intermediate, Intermediate-Advanced or Advanced, referring to the level of difficulty. Following the main body, there is a bibliography, index, and abbreviations of music publishers.

The criteria of deciding which piece can be included and which piece should not is too vague and abstract.
