Blumenthal, Howard J. The World Music CD Listener's Guide. The Best on CD. New York: Billboard Books, An Imprint of Watson-Guptill Publications, [1998].
-
A listing of recordings of world music that are readily accessible in today's music store.
-
Includes nine-hundred world music CDs by one-hundred fifty artists, as selected by the author. Artists were selected, among other methods, through conversations with journalists, record companies, and newsgroup conversations. Many CDs were left out because they are not readily available in the United States.
-
Alphabetical by artist. For every artist's entry, there is a brief biography, and a listing of at least two CDs for each group. A description of each CD follows, along with the record label and number. After the alphabetical listing, there is a small section of world music that is not so available, i.e. Russian, Asian, etc. Lastly there is an index of the linked composers, who are similar in style to those mentioned.
-
There are 'Linked' Musicians, or artists that are similar in style to those that are given a full entry in the book. The author recommends every CD listed.
-
Difficult to navigate and arguably biased towards the author's favorite CDs and groups.
