Bryant, Eric Thomas. Music. New York: Philosophical Library, 1965.
-
For the amateur music lover or lay musician, the younger librarian looking for an aid in recommending works on music to those seek help, and/or a college and secondary school librarian for book selection and answering inquiries.
-
A survey of some 250 books about music, mainly in print at the time of writing, nearly all in English and well worth reading. Textbooks, works intended for the professional musician and student, biographies of composers, and books that deal entirely with the works of a single composer were excluded.
-
The book begins with a brief introduction which explains the scope of the survey. The book is then divided into chapters, each chapter focusing in on books relevant to each category: 1) dictionaries, encyclopedias and bibliographies; 2) histories of music; 3) voices and instruments; 4) the repertoire aids to selection; 5) some technicalities; 6) musical appreciation; and 7) gramophone records. Each chapter is written in prose. Books are discussed not in any specific order but as the author sees fit to weave them into the text. Book titles are in bold. An index in two sections is found at the end of the book. The first section of the index is an author and title index listing all works discussed in the book. Entries are made under author's name and also under title of book. The second index is of topics and contains names of translators, writers whose opinions are quoted, etc. Prices of books and out of print books are indicated in the second index.
-
There does not appear to be any criteria for what details are given for each book discussed, but rather whatever the author deems important. The price information given in the index is most likely out of date, considering the book was published in 1969.
