Begins with an introductory essay on 20th-century music by Nicolas Slonimsky. In the chronicle, each year (1900-1979) consists of five sections: 1- Opera, 2- Dance, 3- Instrumental and Vocal Music, 4- Births, Deaths, and Debuts, 5- Related Events. The first three sections mostly report first performances. Individual events within each section are listed in chronological order, and generally include a short paragraph describing the event's significance and context. Includes a bibliography and a general index.
