Includes selected American art songs, written or published after 1980, for one voice with keyboard accompaniment and English text. Clifton selected songs for inclusion “based on their musical quality, the quality of the poetry, and suitability for performance.” For prolific composers, the author includes only representative examples.

Alphabetical by composer last name. Each composer entry provides birth/death dates, a brief biographical sketch, and a bibliography. For each composer, song cycles are listed first, followed by individual songs (both ordered alphabetically by title). Song cycle entries include cycle title, songs contained, and a short description. Song entries provide song title, song cycle title, name of poet, publication information, year composed, voice type, vocal range, discography number, and a brief critical commentary.
