For finding information on chamber music and its composers, including less-conventional instrumentations and lesser-known composers.
-
The four-volume set defines chamber music as music to be performed by one player to a part and for groups of two to nine players. Cohn attempts comprehensive coverage, including all periods and styles, and every musical type, with a few exceptions: compositions with voice, piano duets, and compositions for two pianos.
-
Cohn has organized the volumes alphabetically by composer name and subject, in standard dictionary format. Each volume contains a full A-Z table of contents, aiding in research of related topics. The Table of Contents also has a List of Related Essays, such as treatises and musicological research, which are included in the body of the work. The Preface includes examples of chamber compositions by composers typically known for their work in other genres. In each volume, compositions are treated separately, with exceptions listed in the Preface. In general, composers are listed first, followed by their works according to the number of instruments, then by opus number (if present). There is a lengthy explanatory introduction, and no index.
-
The Related Essays provide information not typically so easily accessible, and direct to further research.
-
The lack of an index forces users to rely solely on the Table of Contents to locate information.
