Collver, Michael, and Bruce Dickey. A Catalog of Music for the Cornett. Bloomington, and Indianapolis: Indiana University Press, 1996.
-
Identifying and locating musical compositions that include the cornett (cornetto, cornetino, zink) in the instrumentation. Most of this music is not available in published form. The provided repertoire consists mostly of original manuscripts and prints, and is intended as a guide to primary source material.
-
From the late 1500's to 1815 in western Europe. Due to confusion of terminology (i.e. the terms cornetto and cornetta in Italy circa 1815 also referred to the keyed bugle and the valved cornet), 1815 was chosen as the cutoff date. Research for cornett music included Repertoire International des Sources Musicales (RISM), individual library catalogs, thematic composer indices, and other bibliographic tools. Limitations include knowledge of where to look for cornett repertoire, legibility of repertoire, and accessibility to the material within libraries.
-
There are two separate lists: vocal and instrumental music. Pieces are cross-referenced in sources that contain both vocal and instrumental music. Entries are arranged alphabetically by composer. Multiple works by a single composer appear chronologically if printed, and alphabetically by library and call number if in manuscript form.
-
An accurate representation of the type of repertoire written for the cornett. It provides great insight to the importance of the instrument in its golden age (1550-1650), and touches on its vast repertoire. Introduction to the catalog is extensive.
-
Catalog is quite incomplete. Before 1600, instrumentation was rarely specified; instrumentalists commonly played vocal music, which music cannot be contained in a cornett catalog.
