Crabtree, Phillip D., and Donald H. Foster. Sourcebook for Research in Music. Bloomington & Indianapolis: Indiana University Press, 1993.
-
This book is intended as an introductory reference source of varied information, largely bibliographical, pertaining to research in the field of music. Because the book is an adaptation of materials used by the authors to teach courses in music bibliography, research, and writing at the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati, it may also function as a course textbook.
-
This book covers only those areas of music research the authors deem necessary for an introduction. It is not an exhaustive source bibliography. Preference was given to research sources that are more recent and up-to-date, and in English, although some important early sources are listed under the heading Of Historical Interest, and some more recent foreign language sources are included. No other criteria were given.
-
The book begins with a chapter of introductory materials pertaining to music research. This is followed by seven chapters of bibliographies, each of a different type of source: Ch. 2- Basic Bibliographical Tools for Research in Music, 3- Area Bibliographies and Other Reference Sources, 4- Dictionaries and Encyclopedias of Music, 5- Sources Treating the History of Music, 6- Current Research Journals in Music, 7- Editions of Music, 8- Miscellaneous Sources. Chapters begin with a short explanation of the types of sources included, and then sources are listed under each category or subcategory in alphabetical order. The bibliographies are usually divided into subcategories in order to avoid the confusion of long, undifferentiated lists of variously related items. To facilitate navigation through all these subcategories, the detailed Contents page lists all subheadings. Includes two indexes: the Index of Authors, Editors, Compilers, Translators, and Composers; and the Index of Titles.
-
Lists sophisticated sources useful for advanced musicological research, but does so selectively, so as not to overwhelm the beginner.
