Craven, Robert R., ed. Symphony Orchestras of the United States: Selected Profiles. New York, Westport, Connecticut; and London: Greenwood Press, 1986.
-
Craven directed his compilation to the general reader who wishes to find information on major symphony orchestras such as historical background, seasonal activities, and budget outline.
-
Craven limited his list of Major Symphony Orchestras using the American Symphony Orchestra League 1981-1982 list of Major and Regional Orchestras, and any that weren't included there but were a part of the 55 Highest Budget of the 1981-1982 season. In addition, Craven ensured that each state was represented by at least one orchestra. Some entries were excluded due to specific request.
-
The broad organization of the work is as follows: Introduction, Symphony Orchestras of the United States (the main body of the work, arranged alphabetically by state), a Chronology of Foundings for Orchestras Profiled, a Selected Bibliography, Index, and About the Contributors. A Preface includes the Scope and Purpose of the Works, Sources, Definitions, Abbreviations, Brief Bibliographic Guide, and a Primer of Historical Commonalities. The entries were written by various contributors, compiled and edited by Craven. Each entry contains the population of the city of origin, class ranking of the orchestra (Major or Regional), points of interest, budget outline, key activities, length of season, prominent names, chronology of directors, bibliography, and access information.
-
The work is unbiased, utilizing information from many contributors. The access information, specific activities and season length for each symphony would prove helpful for those interested in auditioning.
-
The book is fairly dated, which would likely affect the accuracy of information such as key activities, season length, directors, and budget outline. The Orchestra list is limited, including only the orchestras fitting the criteria listed above. The bibliographies at the end of each entry are clustered in paragraph form and difficult to decipher.
