Davidson, James Robert. A Dictionary of Protestant Church Music. Metuchen, New Jersey: The Scarecrow Press, 1975.
-
Intended for the musical amateur, student and scholar seeking accurate and pertinent information on terms, and musical and liturgical topics related to Protestant church music.
-
Includes terms and topics peculiar to the music and worship of non-Catholic (or Orthodox) Christian churches, accurately defined and delineated in their historical perspective. Includes terms in all appropriate languages, and is not limited to English or Latin. It does not include biographical articles as separate entries.
-
A Table of Abbreviations, which cites appropriate bibliographic references as well as signs and symbols, precedes the alphabetized dictionary entries. Each individual entry features the origin and etymology of the word or phrase, and a brief historical summary of the term’s application from its origin to the present day. Some entries include musical examples, facsimiles or illustrations to clarify the term. Entries usually conclude with a brief bibliography containing both primary and secondary source materials. An alphabetically-arranged index of composers, musical works, and publications finishes the volume, providing page numbers for each entry as well as any other succinct items not included in the main entry.
-
The inclusion of an historical summary offers a richer understanding of the terms. The bibliographic entries help direct students and scholars to other sources for further study.
