The introduction to this volume is divided into four subsections. The first section addresses the classification of folk songs. The second section explains the system of classification used in this volume. The third section includes a tabular summary of folk songs described in the volume, and the fourth section describes the history of the Virginia Folklore Society as well as its collecting activities.The songs are classified under the topics mentioned above, and then further classified under sub-topics. A table of contents at the beginning of the volume lists all the songs under each topic and sub-topic. Included at the end of the volume is an appendix of phonograph records of Virginia Folk-songs. Also included is an alphabetical index of titles and first lines.The following data where available are given to each song: Local title; First line; Name and address of the collector; Name and address of the singer; County in Virginia where the song was sung; Date; Number of stanzas; Music written as well as the composer of the tune; Type and size of record, if the item is a phonographic recording; Few significant facts, occasionally added.
