Diamond, Harold J. Music Criticism: An Annotated Guide to the Literature. New Jersey: The Scarecrow Press, Inc., 1979.
-
A seeking aid for readily available sources on critical and analytical material regarding musical compositions. Aimed at undergraduates and serious musical amateurs.
-
Works excluded sources are: doctoral dissertations, non-English works, articles focusing on editorial problems, subjective, or descriptive commentary; music with broad popular appeal. Covered solo works consist mainly of keyboard music. Under Opera, entries on plot are included only if necessary to clarify music. Spelling of titles and composer names are in forms familiar to English-speaking readers. Time frame of coverage begins with Machaut (1300) and continues until the 20th century. The majority of composers covered are well-known, popular composers. Discussions deemed too advanced for general music undergraduates are avoided whenever possible. Only works easy to obtain are included.
-
Organized into seven chapters, a bibliography, a composer index, and a composition title index. Each chapter deals with a specific musical form. Composers are listed alphabetically under chapter. Composer sections are divided first into general subheadings and then into specific pieces, with works listed alphabetically beneath by author name. Each entry provides complete bibliographic information followed by a brief annotation by the editor. Composer Index is organized alphabetically by composer's last name, with individual pieces listed alphabetically beneath composer's name. Composition title index consists only of well known works is organized alphabetically by title of composition.
-
The book's availability principle makes its inventory a good start for beginning music students.
-
Includes only English works, which greatly limits scope. In order to search for a specific piece, the genre must be known beforehandif not, one must consult the indexes, which is not always helpful because Composition Title Index is not inclusive of all compositions covered. Often annotations are cryptically brief and occasionally unhelpful.
