-
A survey of George Rochberg's music and life written in honor of his seventieth birthday that hopes expose his work to a broader audience and correct inaccuracies circulated within the literature. Written for scholars, performers, and critics.
-
Within the introduction, open letters written by Rochberg's colleagues, associates, and friends on the occasion of his birthday have been included. Quotes by Rochberg in the introduction date from 1963 to 1985, included because they were deemed precious, summarized his thoughts and style, or helped the reader better appreciate his music. Items in bibliography consist of articles, reviews, interviews, and abstracts and are selected for covering a specific Rochberg work or for discussing his works and interests from a broad perspective.

It begins with an introduction on the topic of Rochberg's seventieth birthday and addresses the thinking of George Rochberg as illustrated by personal quotes. A list of primary works cited in the guide follows, divided into two sections: an alphabetical listing by title and then a listing grouped alphabetically by instrument. The resource then divides into two parts. Part 1 concerns itself with the Compositions, divided into seven sections. 1.1 is a chronology of his works and life. 1.2 lists pieces commissioned by Dixon for Rochberg's seventieth birthday, alphabetized by composer. 1.3 alphabetically catalogues Rochberg's works by title, providing date of composition, publication information, duration, commission, premier, dedications, instrumentation, and notes by the composer. 1.4 lists compositions that borrow from other composers, divided into two sections: the first alphabetical by title, the second alphabetical by composer. 1.5 alphabetically lists by title Rochberg compositions that borrow other Rochberg works. 1.6 is an introduction to the poems and stories of Paul Rochenberg, written by George Rochberg. 1.7 alphabetically lists by title texts used in vocal works, providing title, author, and quotes text used. Part II concerns itself with documents, divided into nine sections. 2.1 alphabetically lists articles and essays authored by the composer by title. 2.2 alphabetically lists letters housed in public collections, listed alphabetically by sender. Entries include collection, topics, works discussed, and names mentioned within the text. 2.3 is a discography and list of liner notes. Entries are grouped by composition, which are listed alphabetically, and include the names of the performers, date of recording, record label number, and author of liner notes. 2.4 2.7 are alphabetical listings by title of original manuscripts and documents housed in various locations. 2.4 is the Library of Congress, providing description and call number. 2.5 is the New York Public Library, listed by library's item designation number, providing title, publishing information, description, notes, and call number. 2.6 is the Harvard University Library, providing physical description. 2.7 is Theodore Presser Company and lists only title. 2.8 is a bibliography, divided into two sections. The general bibliography alphabetized by author. Entries in the Bibliography by Subject are categorized by title (listed alphabetically), then are alphabetized by author. Entries in both sections include the type of material the item is, performers discussed, names of all composers, authors, and musicians mentioned, other works discussed, and other works mentioned. 2.9 is an alphabetical listing by author of dissertations and thesis on Rochberg. The Table of Contents also includes a list of all 12 black-and-white illustrations used in the book, which consist of images from Rochberg's scores, Rochberg himself, and individuals associated with him.
