Duckles, Vincent, comp. Music Reference and Research Materials: An Annotated Bibliography. 3rd ed. New York: The Free Press, 1974.
-
A bibliography highlighting resources available for reference and research in traditional historical musicology within a small music research library. Intended for graduate students and music reference librarians.
-
Works are selected because they directly address or pertain to music. It avoids biography, local histories, monographs, or subject studies and instead emphasizes works consisting of lists, inventories, and alphabetized compilations of facts about music.
-
Book is divided into eleven sections, each covering a different type of reference: 1) Dictionaries and Encyclopedias, 2) Histories and Chronologies, 3) Guides to Systematic and Historical Musicology, 4) Bibliographies of Music Literature, 5) Bibliographies of Music, 6) Catalogs of Music Libraries and Collections, 7) Catalogs of Musical Instrument Collections, 8) Histories and Bibliographies of Music Printing and Publishing, 9) Discographies, 10) Yearbooks and Directories, and 11) Miscellaneous and Bibliographical Tools. There are also three indexes: 1) Authors, Editors, and Reviewers, 2) Subjects, and 3) Titles. Each main section is subdivided into smaller topics under the main subject heading. Each subsection begins with a detailed explanation of selection criteria for that grouping. All entries are alphabetically ordered by author and are progressively numbered with titles entered only once, with a few exceptions. Each entry provides complete bibliographic information with editor's annotative remarks. All information is printed in its original language. All information is printed in its original language. Some entries lack annotation or direct readers to book reviews instead. All entries within the indexes are organized alphabetically by name, subject, or title, respectively.
-
Though not comprehensive, the listed resources are extensive.
-
Editor admits selection is often restricted by what is available at music research libraries at Berkeley. The presentation of information within entries is not always in standardized order.
