-
To aid in research regarding the life and musical writings of Guillaume de Machaut. The source is a guide to secondary sources, including books, recordings, and manuscripts.
-
Includes listings of many types of sources, including manuscripts and recordings, as well as an extensive bibliography of research relating to Machaut. While written in English, this book references sources in other languages, particularly French. The sources range from those of Machaut’s day (14th Century) to those written or recorded in the beginning of 1995, from all over the world. It covers a broad range of subjects, not just those that are musicological, including political history, literary history, codicology, and art history.
-
Organized into eight chapters, and followed by a bibliography and three indexes. Chapter 1, Biography of Guillaume de Machaut, is divided into subsections, organized chronologically. Chapters 2 through 7 describe specific manuscripts, poetic works, and musical works. Each of these chapters is divided into subsections based on the specific work or genre. Chapter 8, Discography, has several subsections based on recordings of a specific work, on performance practice, and on record label. The bibliography is listed purely alphabetically by author, and is complete in its entries. The three indexes include an index of manuscripts; a general index; and an index of titles, first lines, and refrains of Machaut’s compositions.
-
This source is useful in finding more than just music-related information regarding Machaut.
-
The bibliography is not divided into any subject or other subsections. Thus, unless you know the specific author of a source, it is time consuming to browse for a source relevant to a specific research endeavor, in spite of the general index.
