The Joint Commission on Church Music. Service Music and Anthems for the Nonprofessional Choir. Greenwich, Connecticut: Seabury Press, Incorporated, 1955.
-
For Episcopal or other Christian choirs who are looking to pick music to perform. Useful for knowing if the music is realistic/doable for the choir's skill level.
-
Church service music and anthems are the focus of this book. Music included was reviewed by Protestant Episcopal organists and choirmasters around the United States, and only those selections that ranged from very easy to moderate in difficulty were included. Both accompanied and unaccompanied choir pieces are included. The introduction states that this book is not a comprehensive list, and it should be reviewed and added to every three years.
-
After the short two-page introduction, the bulk of the book is organized into three main parts:
Part 1: Service Music- Overall, this list is set in order of use throughout the day, broken into three main sections: 1) The Holy Communion, 2) Morning Prayer, and 3) Evening Prayer. Both sections 2 and 3 have subheadings for different prayer songs, listed in the order in which they would be sung during the service.
Part 2: Anthems - These are listed in chronological order of important church holidays and events in which they would be used, such as Advent, Lent, and Eastertide. After the holidays, there is a section entitled General, which are songs for general use in any service.
Part 3: Collections -A short list of collections of music the reader might find useful.
Under each heading and subheading in all parts, songs are listed in alphabetical order by composer's last name. Each entry includes the composer, title, any relevant notes/descriptions (such as unaccompanied, or soprano solo), difficulty rating (between very easy, easy, and moderate), and the publisher and publishing number. The book ends with two pages of explanatory notes, giving the legend of all abbreviations used. -
Recognition that this book will need to be added to on a regular basis. I also believe the difficulty ratings are a great asset.
-
Explaining abbreviations and giving the legend at the end of the book instead of the beginning can be confusing to the reader.
