700 books and articles evaluated. All known examples of eyewitness observations have been included, as well as house programs of selected theatres with notable essays. Excluded are book reviews, popular works that do not offer unique historical perspective, encyclopedia entries, dictionaries, general histories of music, and performance histories not contributing to broad views of Puccini criticism. Languages of works are in English, Italian, German, French, and Spanish. The time frame of works used is 1884 to 1997. Included institutional resources are devoted solely to scholarly study.

Organized into three major sections. The first section is an Introduction to Puccini and Puccini Studies. Includes chronology of life and work, work list in table format, and broad overview of Puccini studies. The second section is an Annotated Bibliography of Puccini Studies. It is subdivided into 11 smaller headings, which group entries by genre of work (biographies, letters, etc.). Each genre heading is then subdivided further into different related topics. Entries are organized chronologically under topic heading. Numbered entries include an annotation by the author. Bibliographic information is complete and includes LC number and sometimes ISBN number. The last section is five appendices. Appendix 1 is a guide to locating manuscript materials organized by country. Appendix 2 is a selected list of Puccini-devoted organizations and museums complete with addresses and telephone numbers. Appendix 3 is list of literary sources for Puccini's operas. Appendix 4 is a list of six frequently asked questions about composer and his works. Appendix 5 is a selected list of audio and video recordings of Puccini's music organized chronologically.
