Bibliography includes Arabian sources, including manuscripts, that relate in any way to Arabian music, regardless of their principle subject matter. Some sources are not known to exist today, but their historical significance merits inclusion in this volume. No sources after 1700 are included. Illustrations are reproductions of Arabian art depicting music instruments.
-
Chronological in sections containing sources from each century from 700-1700. Sections are preceded by an introduction to Arabian music. Each section contains briefly annotated bibliographic entries for the sources as well as the location of the source. Individual entries include titles. Individual entries are listed by title. An alternate title is given if the piece can be found under an additional name, followed by a one-sentence description. Sometimes references to additional research materials are offered at the end of an entry. An index concludes the volume with alphabetical listings of composers and their pieces.
