Finell, Judith Greenberg. The Contemporary Music Performance Directory: A Listing of American Performing Ensembles, Sponsoring Organizations, Performing Facilities, Concert Series and Festivals of 20th Century Music. New York: The American Music Center, 1975.
-
A directory intended to assist composers and performers of 20th century music in promoting their works. Also assists sponsoring organizations by identifying groups whose musical interests coincide with theirs.
-
Information in this directory is compiled from responses to postings and questionnaires sent to composers, performers, concert managers, artist representatives, administrators, and educators. Includes performing ensembles, performing facilities, concert series, festivals, and sponsoring organizations in the United States, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. Compiled by the American Music Center between January 1974 and July 1975. Performing groups are included on the basis of performing contemporary music, either exclusively or as part of a larger repertoire. Individuals or full orchestras are not included. Sponsoring organizations are defined at those that fund through grants, residencies, competition awards; donate facilities and supportive services; or present or produce concerts and events.
-
The main directory is divided into four sections: performing ensembles, sponsoring organizations, performing facilities, and concert series/festivals. Each category is organized into the subcategories of state. Within each state, entries are arranged alphabetically by name. Each entry provides the name, contact information, and a brief description of the group/organization/facility/festival. These descriptions contain enough information to gain a general idea of the aims and nature of each entry. A brief bibliography and an extensive index conclude the work.
-
Provides a helpful guide to requesting sponsorship in the Sponsoring Organizations section. Information included in this directory is clear enough to ascertain general purposes and allow the user to identify relevant information.
-
This directory was compiled in 1975 and information is outdated. While many of the organizations and facilities still exist, newer organizations and facilities are not listed and old information may be inaccurate.
